Georgia Gun Laws

Currently in Georgia, you do not need to register a handgun. Handgun registration is required in six states; Georgia is not one of those states. A state permit is not required to either purchase or possess a handgun, shotgun, or rifle. If you intend to carry your weapon outside of your property, however, you must apply for a license to do so at your county probate court. You do not need a permit to carry if you have a hunting license and are carrying your gun for hunting.

Carrying a handgun without a license constitutes a misdemeanor. You may also be charged with a misdemeanor if you intentionally point your gun at another without justification, if you fire a gun within 50 years of a public roadway, fire a gun on another's property without the property owner's permission, or fire a gun while intoxicated. It is also a misdemeanor charge to carry a gun into certain public areas, such as government buildings, courthouses, jails, prisons, mental institutions, bars, nuclear power plants, polling places, and churches. Misdemeanors are generally punished by jail time of less than a year along with fines.
